Why nutrition advisors need to look beyond individual ration costs and turn real-time farm data into better feeding decisions.
A ration can be perfectly optimized on paper and still miss the bigger picture.
A cow's nutritional needs change throughout lactation, and forage quality changes from one batch of silage to the next. Yet rations are often calculated one at a time, using nutritional values that may no longer match what's happening on the farm.
The bigger opportunity lies in optimizing the whole feeding program and keeping it in step with conditions on the farm.
A fresh cow, a cow at peak yield and a dry cow need very different diets. Nutritionists handle this by splitting the cycle into phases or feeding groups, each with its own ration. The principle is simple: match nutrient supply to what the cow needs at each stage.
The decisions behind it are harder. How many groups make sense on this farm? When should cows move from one to the next? How much precision is worth the extra mixing, logistics and management? More groups can improve efficiency, but every additional ration adds work for the farmer.
And the cheapest ration in one phase doesn't necessarily give the best result over the whole lactation.
Take two feeding programs for a 100-cow herd that differ only in the early-lactation ration. In Program A, that ration is formulated at the lowest cost per cow per day. In Program B, it costs €0.25 more but supports 1.2 liters more milk per cow per day over the first 100 days.
| Per cow per day, first 100 days of lactation | Program B vs. Program A |
| Feed cost | +€0.25 |
| Milk yield | +1.2 liters |
| Milk revenue (at €0.45/kg) | +€0.54 |
| Income over feed cost | +€0.29 |
Illustrative figures.
Across 100 cows and 100 days, that adds up to €2,900 more income over feed cost, from the ration that looked more expensive. Judged per ration, Program A wins. Judged across the program, Program B does, before even counting effects that carry into the rest of the lactation, such as body condition and fertility.
That gap only becomes visible when you evaluate the feeding program as a whole.
BESTMIX Ration Projects lets nutritionists and advisors build customer-specific feeding programs that hold the rations for every production phase. They can then evaluate the program as a whole, including its projected economics, instead of treating each ration as a separate calculation.
Advisors can also compare alternative programs, such as an extra feeding group or a richer early-lactation ration, before recommending one.
This changes the conversation with the farmer. Instead of presenting a ration and its price, the advisor can show how the program fits the herd's production cycle and what it's expected to deliver for the farm. It's a shift from selling feed to delivering nutritional and economic advice.
A well-designed program is only as reliable as the values it was calculated with, and on farms those values rarely stand still.
Silage is the clearest example. Its composition varies between harvests, storage conditions and batches, and grass silage, maize silage and other forages often differ from the table values used when the ration was first formulated. When the forage in the feed alley differs significantly from what the calculation assumes, the cows aren't eating the ration on paper.
The obvious answer is to analyze the forage and adjust the ration. The harder question is how quickly that analysis can turn into a feeding decision.
BESTMIX Sample Basket brings sample analysis results into Ration Calculation, so advisors work with the latest values without retyping them by hand. Depending on the feed company's setup, results go straight into the ration calculation or first pass through quality control system.
Combined with a handheld analysis device, this shortens the whole loop. The advisor measures the forage on the farm, the results reach the ration calculation digitally, and the adjusted ration can be discussed before the advisor leaves. Which parameters can be measured depends on the device and the integration, but with the right setup, turnaround drops from days to minutes.
For the advisor, that creates an opportunity to move from:
"We'll analyze the sample and get back to you."
to:
"Let's use the latest analysis to see whether your ration needs adjusting."
Ration Projects and Sample Basket address different parts of the same challenge.
One helps nutritionists understand the economics of feeding an animal across its production cycle. The other helps ensure ration calculations reflect current nutritional information from the farm.
Together, they support a more complete approach to feed advice: plan for the whole production cycle, but make decisions using what's happening today.
For ration advisors, this also creates an opportunity to strengthen their relationships with farmers.
Because the value of good nutrition advice isn't measured by how cheaply one ration can be formulated. It's measured by how well the entire feeding strategy supports the farmer's objectives.
